Bellarmine, Turberville, and Sadler

In addition to a compelling Foreword by Bishop Athanasius Schneider, two of the most famous English catechisms are included in this volume, along with a lesser-known Benedictine catechism from the 1600s:

  • A Shorte Catechisme, by Robert Cardinal Bellarmine (1614)
  • An Abridgment of the Christian Doctrine, a.k.a. the Douay Catechism, by Fr. Henry Turberville (1649)
  • The Childes Catechism, by Fr. Thomas Vincent Sadler (1678)

The first, composed by the renowned Doctor of the Church and celebrated patron of catechists, features beautifully restored woodcuts alongside a brilliant pedagogical method once considered for universal use in the Church. Second is the famous “Douay Catechism,” with its hundreds of Scripture references and thorough explanations in response to Protestant errors of the time, as well as a striking catechesis on the prayers of the ancient Roman Mass. The third is a lovely little work offering a touching glimpse of the parental art of conversational religious instruction of children in the 17th century.
